Chapter Ten—The First Game

My iPod played as I finished my makeup. When “Us” by Regina Spektor came on, I imagined that the statues she sang about were statues of Marco and me. And as the people passed us, they would smile because they knew, by the way our eyes were eternally locked, that we were in love. The doorbell interrupted my daydream. Within seconds, Maggie was running up the stairs, yelling my name. “Lindsey, Lindsey…it’s Grouper!”

“All right, already, I’ll be right down.”

But it was too late. Maggie burst through my bedroom door. “Lindsey, Grouper’s here.”

“I heard you the first time.”

“Where are you going? Does Mom know that you’re not going to be here for dinner?”

“I’m going to the football game, and yes, Mom knows.”

“That’s not fair. I want to go to the game. Can I go too?”

“Absolutely not!”

“But why? You won’t even know I’m there. I want to see Teeny too. She asked me if I was gonna go to see her cheer. She’ll be looking for me,” Maggie said.

“First of all, Teeny isn’t even going to notice whether or not you’re there. She was just trying to be polite. Second of all, I’m not watching you. Ask Mom or Dad to take you.”

At that, Maggie was running back down the stairs, yelling, “Mom can we go to the game?”

“If you go, you can’t sit with me!” I yelled after her.

I looked in the mirror one last time. I was wearing a T-shirt from Aeropostale, skinny jeans from dELiA*s, and a pair of Toms. I was happy with the way I looked. Teeny was right about one thing; changing my wardrobe did help me in the confidence department.

“Hurry up, Lindsey. I told Teeny that we’d be there early,” Grouper yelled from downstairs.

“Coming.”

I was excited to see Teeny cheer, but I was especially looking forward to spending time with Marco. Seeing him in school wasn’t enough for me anymore. Even though we talked on Facebook every night, it wasn’t the same as seeing him in person. Sure, the computer allowed me to read his thoughts, but it didn’t allow me to hear his voice, look into his eyes, or feel his warm hands.

“Hi, Grouper…Bye, Mom.” I slammed the front door behind me, and we began the short walk to Marco’s house. I was glad to have a few moments alone with Grouper so we could talk about his new relationship. “You and Jocelyn seem to like each other a lot.”

“I love Jocelyn; she’s amazing.” There’s that goofy smile again.

“Do you mean that you love her?”

“Hell yeah! I really love her, Lindsey. I feel like I’ve known her forever. I can’t imagine life without her. I swear that I know Jocelyn from a previous life.”

“But you’ve only known her for a few weeks. How can you love her like that?”

“I can’t explain it. It doesn’t feel like anything I’ve ever felt before. I don’t need to eat or sleep. I only want to be with Jocelyn.”

“Really? But Jocelyn is so…” I paused, searching for the right words.
